The Knot Garden
Nestling amongst the ruins and yew hedges is the stunning Knot Garden. A style originally popular in the Elizabethan era, this garden was planted in 1995 and the design is based on a pattern on a dress worn by Elizabeth 1 in a portrait which hangs in the Castle.
1,200 box hedges form an intricate geometric design, interspersed with coloured gravel and with a Moorish mosaic fountain at the centre. Pots of Egyptian papyrus adorn the four corners in the Summer.
In the Knot Garden:
• Box hedges
• Egyptian papyrus
• Strawberry vine
• Campsis radicans
• Actinidea kolomikta
